Actress Melissa Barrera has been fired from the latest Scream film as a result of comments made about the ongoing Israel-Palestine situation.
The actress, who has featured as part of the 'core four' in the latest Scream films, has been dropped from the latest film in the franchise due to series of social media posts in the wake of the Israel-Hamas War. THR reported she was fired, effective immediately, with SpyGlass Media Group releasing the below statement following the news.
We have zero tolerance for antisemitism or the incitement of hate in any form, including false references to genocide, ethnic cleansing, Holocaust distortion or anything that flagrantly crosses the line into hate speech.
Filming had not begun, and development had been slow amid the actors and writers strikes. Now, Spyglass is expected to recalibrate plans following Barrera’s firing. Following backlash from fans worldwide, director Christopher Landon also had to issue the below statement.
“This is my statement: 💔 Everything sucks. Stop yelling. This was not my decision to make.”
Barrera has become a big name within the Scream franchise following the success of the last two films, especially with the absence of Campbell's Sidney Prescott in Scream VI.
