Courteney Cox Reprises Role For Scream 6
Updated: Jul 14
Neve Campbell has stated she will not be returning for Scream 6 amid what appears to be a pay dispute with Paramount, and although it hasn't affected Cox reprising her role as Gale Weathers production has been delayed until June 9th.
Campbell revealed her decision not to return after being offered less than her worth, and being such a pinnacle character within the franchise it's a bit of a shock to the system. Considering the last film grossed $140 million globally, it's a low move from those pulling the strings in regards to budget. Campbell stated it was "a very difficult decision to move on".
“Sadly I won’t be making the next Scream film. As a woman I have had to work extremely hard in my career to establish my value, especially when it comes to Scream. I felt the offer that was presented to me did not equate to the value I have brought to the franchise. It’s been a very difficult decision to move on. To all my Scream fans, I love you. You’ve always been so incredibly supportive to me. I’m forever grateful to you and to what this franchise has given me over the past 25 years.”
The delay in production may be nothing to do with Campbell's shock announcement yesterday but it's probably safe to say these are likely related. David Arquette weighed in on the situation during an interview with Comicbook.com.
"I'd love for her to be a part of it. A Scream movie without Sidney is kind of unfortunate, but I understand her decision. It's all a business in a way, they have to balance all these elements to fit a budget and produce a film. I get it, she's still alive! She [can] absolutely be in future ones, but I think it's up to fans to call for that in the future. [...] That is sudden, it's a business, though. I respect her decision, for sure."
Courteney Cox, however, is set to reprise her role for Scream 6 and has officially revealed the news in an interview with Variety yesterday. This makes her the only original cast member appearing in the upcoming film.
"I did not die so yes you will see me. Gale’s pretty strong. She may not ever [die], but who knows!"
New franchise cast members Jenna Ortega, Melissa Barrera, Jasmin Savoy Brown and Mason Gooding are returning for Scream 6. Hayden Panettiere has also signed on to reprise her fan favourite role of Kirby from 2011's Scream 4. Dermot Mulroney is the latest cast member to be announced. In the next instalment, opening on March 31, 2023; the four survivors of the Ghostface killings leave Woodsboro behind and start a fresh chapter.
