Sony Working On 'I Know What You Did Last Summer' Sequel

After attempting to (and failing to) revive 'I Know What You Did Last Summer' franchise in a short lived mediocre Amazon series, it appears Sony are now gearing up for a sequel to the 1997 slasher film. And it appears two familiar faces are in talks to return.

As reported by Deadline, Jennifer Kaytin Robinson will be directing with original stars Freddie Prinze Jr. and Jennifer Love Hewitt hoping to return.

"Following the successful relaunch of Scream, Sony Pictures is looking to blow new life in to its own slasher franchise as sources tell Deadline that Jennifer Kaytin Robinson has been tapped to direct a sequel to I Know What You Did Last Summer, with Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr in talks to reprise their roles."

Plot details for the sequel aren't yet known, but Leah McKendrick will be writing the script with original producer Neal H. Moritz also returning. From the sounds of it, the film will be following the "legacy" approach Scream 5 had so much success with and mixing original characters with a cast of fresh faces. Robinson and McKendrick were said to have blown away producers with their pitch for the upcoming sequel.

"While McKendrick is penning the pic, the idea for the new film came from Robinson and McKendrick, who blew away studio execs when they pitched this idea for a sequel last fall, especially given the recent success of the Scream franchise. That film was recently relaunched with original cast members returning, and the idea of bringing back original castmembers to draw in old-school fans while also adding fresh faces to relaunch the series was too good for the studio to pass up."

More to follow as we learn it.
