Netflix Set to Remake Stephen King's Cujo

Netflix has just agreed a deal to bring King's iconic rabid dog back to life in a new film.

Stephen King's Cujo

As reported by Deadline-

Netflix has made a deal to turn the Stephen King bestselling novel Cujo into a new feature film. Roy Lee (IT) is producing, and they will go out to writers immediately.

No other details have been released at this time.

Stephen King's novel first published in 1981, with Lewis Teague's harrowing adaptation starring Dee Wallace re;easing a mere two years later. The film follows the story of Donna Trenton (Dee Wallace), a mother desperately trying to protect her son from a formerly friendly 200-pound St. Bernard that has been bitten by a rabid bat. This, of course, changes the gentle giant into a ferocious, calculating hound that leaves a trail of bodies behind it. Trenton and her infant son get stuck in her small car that won’t start leaving them two choices- battle it out with the rabid oversized hound or risk heatstroke in a hot car.

The film of course went on to become a major success, and a fan favourite, grossing $21 million worldwide against a $6 million budget. The killer dog was portrayed in that using a mix of five real St. Bernard dogs, a Labrador & Great Dane (both in costume), animatronics and actor Gary Morgan in a dog costume. Hopefully, the filmmakers will opt for practical over digital effects, but we'll just have to wait and see.

This of course isn't the first we've heard of a Cujo remake. It was announced ten years ago that Sunn Classic Pictures was behind a new Cujo adaptation titled C.U.J.O. (“Canine Unit Joint Operations”), but that project never got off the ground.
