Back in January 2025 we shared news that a third Gremlins film was 'reportedly on the way', and now it seems a step closer as one of the original films stars has confirmed the script is finished.

Chris Columbus has finished writing the screenplay for the third film, and according to Zach Galligan it's now down to Steven Spielberg whether or not this film gets the green light. Galligan revealed the news at a comic con in Manchester last week.
“After 35 years, they’ve come up with a script. Warner Bros. is incredibly interested in doing it. Apparently it’s waiting on Mr. Spielberg to read it and approve it. But you can thank the success of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.””
Hopefully this will spell the beginning of the end for a film that's seemingly been stuck in development hell for as long as we can remember. Aside from that huge news from Warner Bros. CEOs Mike De Luca and Pam Abdy earlier in this year, all we had to go on was an update from Columbus himself back in 2017 in an interview with SlashFilm. He called the script twisted and dark whilst assuring fans the Gremlins will not be done with CGI.
"I'm really proud of the script. It is as twisted and dark as anything, so we'll see. It's always a budgetary conversation when we're going to shoot it. I wanted to go back to the really twisted sensibility of the first movie. I found that was a very easy place for me to fall back into and start writing again so hopefully we'll see that movie soon."

"Oh, without a doubt, minimal CGI. CGI will enable us to remove wires and make the puppeteers lives a little easier. It was brutal. It was like a marathon every night for those guys. In the bar scene alone there were 18 [or] 20 people behind the bar. No one had any space to move. It was just hellish for those guys so CGI will simplify that a little bit but it's all puppets."
